Power Player Feature: Fiona Bloom of The Bloom Effect
More than 20 years ago at a friend’s wedding, I had the pleasure of meeting the incredible publicist, Fiona Bloom. Her magnetic energy and genuine passion for bringing people together were instantly clear. In fact, that passion sparked a few collaborative networking events for us back in the early 2000s. Since then, her company, The Bloom Effect, has become a major force in music PR. With a vast international network and a roster of big-name clients in entertainment, Fiona’s impact in the industry is undeniable. What service/product does your business provide?
Services include Marketing, PR, Branding, Tour Strategy and Intl Consulting.
What inspired you to start it? What problem do you help customers solve?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I love thinking outside the box and tapping into my creative juices. Nothing’s a crazy idea until it is, and nothing’s impossible until it is! If I could start something and get it off the ground, anyone can.
What have been some challenges in building your business?
My biggest challenge is the lack of resources. Not having the financial means. It’s hard to grow and expand without investors or a team. I’ve been especially innovative in ways to build and develop the business organically. I think if you do things organically, there’s more staying power and when you have the passion, dreams and lofty goals, it will eventually happen! Yes it takes longer, but I’ve been called a fine wine before. Gets better as it matures.
What special talents have you used to pull it all together?
I like to say I’m a woman with many talents, but then I sound like I’m bragging or tooting my own horn! Haha but if you don’t toot it, who will? My biggest talent is my mouthpiece. I’m everyone’s cheerleader. My energy and enthusiasm is contagious. It spreads around the globe and resonates from far and wide! I love to work a room. I’m skilled at connecting people. I’m a renaissance woman and tastemaker. Oh and I can spot raw talent instantly. I’m a good communicator and orator. Some say it’s my British accent, others say it’s my charm, but I think more importantly, it’s my emotional intelligence and a little bit of magic! Hence, The Bloom Effect!
What do you think are the main keys to being successful in business?
A lot to being successful is showing up and showing up on time. And having your finger on the pulse. Sometimes going with your gut and heart. Keeping the authenticity and saying it again.. Passion! Yes, it’s great to have business savvy but it’s equally important to have tenacity, courage, faith and humility. I also live by example, since I treat people the way I want to be treated. Other ingredients that make up a successful business is being a good listener and always exploring new opportunities and being open.
What’s your favorite “me time” escape?
I love to go hiking. It really grounds me being in nature and the outdoors. That’s where I rejuvenate, come alive and feed my mind, body and soul. Fresh air, seeing wildlife, flowers, the birds, and enjoying peaks and valleys. Puts life into perspective. Plus, I get not only to bond with myself, which is very grounding, but I hike with good friends, and that’s an incredible experience that’s shared.
What would you like your legacy to be? How do you want to be remembered?
This question is always a tough one. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to question my mortality more, but I also wonder how I’ll be remembered if at all. I actually would really love to be remembered as the one who made people laugh. One who always brought the party everywhere she went. Unafraid, bold and unapologetic. One that lived her best life, that was kind and generous. That I was a hustler and unstoppable. Never bothered by failure and could pick herself back up, dust off and restart! I’ve always said it’s about the journey, not the destination. I would love for people to admire me just for that.
What was a special gift you had as a child that you use in your business?
I had a few special gifts as a child. I loved to entertain the class with my stories. I had a wild imagination and used to tell ghost stories, and overall, loved storytelling and anything that would captivate and excite the kids. I suppose that same excitement I carried with me throughout my whole life both personally and professionally.
I also made people laugh by cracking jokes and doing character impersonations. Making people laugh has worked well in business, as it breaks the ice when you’re networking at conferences or events. And then the storytelling and excitement has come in handy when giving presentations and on speaking engagements. My energy and passion has translated through all these years and has worked in convincing anyone to listen and get behind my clients and business strategy.
What’s a travel destination on your bucket list?
I’m addicted to travel. That’s one of my vices so there’s a ton of travel destinations on my bucket list, but one place I’ve been dying to go forever is India, particularly Chennai.
Any last words of advice for an entrepreneur just starting out?
Just get out there and do it. You never know until you try. If you have a burning desire to fulfill a dream, then it’s your calling. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. I know it sounds cliche, but follow your heart. Be a sponge and learn as much as you can about your industry. If it’s art you want to create, then immerse yourself. There’s no time like the present! Just DO IT. Nike’s right! Hahah. But seriously, it all starts with your yearning, and believing. Stay true to yourself, and never give up! Longevity is the key to all. No such thing as an overnight success. It takes 10,000+ hours just to get started!! Oh and make sure to have fun while you’re doing it, or…. what’s the point!
