Fashion Faux Pas: You can wear it, but wear it well!

By: Jessica Williams
There is absolutely nothing wrong with embracing and loving yourselves, whether you are a size 2 or 22. And how you dress is a direct reflection of your personality.
I am an artist and express myself everyday through what I wear. But even I have to be cognizant of what I put on my body. Seeking attention is normal and to a certain extent, a subconscious act. But being mindful of the type of attention one attracts is the challenging part of it all.
During the 1950s and early 60s, a shapely woman was considered sexy: Betty Paige, Marilyn Monroe, Dorothy Dandridge and other starlets were at least a size twelve, and weren’t afraid to flaunt it. Yes, they wore bikinis and fitted clothing—and looked good in them.
I am 5’ 11, a size 10 or 12 and I like fitted clothing. However, it is important that we are honest with ourselves as far as knowing what works for our body shape, as well as acknowledging what’s appropriate.
Beauty certainly comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. It resonates from within, and what we do to our bodies on the outside is an expression of it. But even that has limitations. Ladies, you can have the most beautiful face in the world, but if your attire is ill fitting or inappropriate, no amount of makeup can cover up a fashion mishap.
Some of you know that deep down, you want to scream if you see another woman wearing sheer, black leggings as stretch pants. Transparent tights with bright underwear showing underneath are not attractive nor fashionable.

No Time for the Gym? Try Fitness Mattrz™ Online Workouts

Easy, Affordable Solution to Staying in Shape

ATLANTA (April 9, 2012) – Optimum Body Sculpting has announced the launch of its new online fitness membership website, Fitness Mattrz™, to help recession-weary consumers keep their fitness regimen on track.

With so many people cutting back on everything from traveling to eating out, Carol Dunlop, owner of Optimum Body Sculpting and creator of Fitness Mattrz™, knew that it was only a matter of time before people scratched fitness off their list, too. With gyms charging $35 to $60 dollars per month for memberships, many consumers find it hard to justify the expense. “More people are opting to work out at home, not only because of money, but it’s more convenient and fits into their busy schedule,” Dunlop said.

Fitness Mattrz™ offers consumers a variety of workouts, including Pilates, yoga, pre- and post-natal workouts, belly dancing, and toning and sculpting classes. New videos will be added monthly.

Along with videos, Fitness Mattrz™ brings consumers the ability to create their own personalized workout, with the Tanya Stroh Training Solution, created by fitness expert Tanya Stroh. Each day, users can create a new workout that comes with a demonstration video, exercise photos and a written description. Workouts can be printed to make it easy to follow along.

Fitness Mattrz™ takes the “whole-person” approach to fitness by providing articles, information and tips from expert coaches in the field of nutrition, lifestyle, spiritual health & wellness and empowerment. In addition, the site offers its “Love to Live” health seminar podcast series where consumers can tune in to learn about various health conditions and ways to combat them through diet, exercise and lifestyle solutions.

Memberships cost $9.97 per month, or $99 annually. As an introductory special, Fitness Mattrz™ is offering two months free on either membership.

For more information or to become a member, visit www.fitnessmattrz.com.

It’s almost swimsuit and shorts season again … and if you’re like most of us, you’ve packed on a few extra pounds during the cold winter. Before you sign up for the latest fad diet, why not try a few simple, everyday changes in your favorite recipes that will shave off fat and calories more painlessly than a strict (and often unrealistic) diet. We’re betting you won’t miss the fat … and will probably continue to use the smarter new versions long after you’ve shed those extra pounds!

Trade yogurt for sour cream

When I make fajitas or chili, I make sure to have all the fixings — fresh lime wedges, chopped cilantro, sliced black olives and guacamole. But instead of fatty sour cream, I pass around a dish of yogurt. The thick, Greek-style yogurt (like FAGE Total brand) has the same dense creaminess as sour cream, and I like its tangy flavor. An ounce (about 2 tablespoons) of low-fat yogurt has about 18 calories and less than a gram of fat. In contrast, even reduced-fat sour cream will add some heft to your meal, with 38 calories and about 3 grams of fat per ounce. (Regular sour cream is about twice the amount of fat and calories as its reduced-fat version.)

Swap soy creamer for heavy cream

“We do an alfredo sauce that’s just incredible, and it doesn’t have any heavy cream in it,” says John Procacci, executive chef of Healthy Chef Creations, a national meal delivery service. His secret? Soy creamer. With 15 calories and 1 gram of fat per tablespoon (compared to 52 calories and 6 grams of fat for the same amount of heavy cream), soy cream like Silk can be used in many cream-based recipes, such as cream soups and bisques and cream sauces. Procacci suggests adding soy creamer at the very end of the recipe, since it won’t reduce like regular cream. Soy milk can also be used in place of dairy milk or cream for sweet and savory recipes; at 100 calories and 4 grams of fat per cup, it has one-third fewer calories and half the fat as whole milk. Silk Soymilk has recipes and cooking tips on its website.

Use cheese where it counts

In cheesy dishes, such as macaroni and cheese or lasagna, be judicious about what types of, and how much, cheese you use. The amount called for in the typical mac ‘n cheese recipe is way more than you need. I make my favorite recipe using 1 percent milk and cutting the amount of cheese by one-third, and my picky family is none the wiser. While many reduced-fat semi-hard cheeses, such as cheddars or colbys, don’t melt as nicely as their full-fat counterparts, part-skim mozzarella melts quite nicely. When you’re using cheese as a topping, such as in vegetables au gratin, you can also opt for smaller amounts of strong-flavored cheeses. A tablespoon of Parmigiano or Pecorino Romano sprinkled on a dish of chopped broccoli, then broiled until it bubbles, will pack a flavor punch at about 4 grams of fat and 50 calories.

Sub apple sauce in baked goods

Did you know that a cup of vegetable shortening has a whopping 1800 calories and 205 grams of fat? You can significantly cut the fat in cakes, muffins and other….READ FULL STORY HERE!

This week Own Your Power Communications nominated our Atlanta-based member Jaz Owens as Do Gooder of the week! She’s the Founder of the A Song for Life Sarcoidosis Foundation and a trailblazer in spreading awareness about this rare disease. Read her story and find out more on how you can help!

“I was diagnosed in May 2006 with the systemic, inflammatory disease Sarcoidosis (sar-coy-doe-sis), the same disease that Comedian Bernie Mac died from ad that many others around the world suffer with.

I was driven to start this organization shortly after my diagnosis because as I began my quest to understand what was happening to me I found myself in the middle of a medical mystery that not even my doctors could solve!

The main goal of the ASFL Sarcoidosis Foundation is to one day become a safe haven of support for sufferer’s andtheir families by positioning ourselves to become a gateway to effective resources, relief services and information for alternative disease management. ASFL is passionate about raising more awareness and finding ways to raise money for research that will lead to finding a cause and a cure!

With each year that passes sufferers of Sarcoidosis continue to stand together in faith, with the hope that one day Sarcoidosis awareness and research efforts will become as big as other causes like Cancer & Autism but until that day comes it is up to those of us who live on the front line of this battle to continue to find the strength to fight the good

fight!

Sufferers of Sarcoidosis can’t accomplish what’s necessary alone we need the help of people like the members of the Own Your Power network to stand with us and get involved! April has been adopted as Sarcoidosis Awareness Month so there will be many rally’s, walks, fundraisers and awareness activities being held from coast to coast so, I encourage people to check them out.

My own 10 year old son Jared has come up with his own FUN awareness activity to honor me and other Sarcoidosis sufferers around the world. He will attempt to set a World Record for wearing the MOST military/dog tags around his neck at one time to help raise awareness and funds for research and we would love it if your readers would participate!

Each military/dog tag costs $5.00 each and will be custom made to reflect support for Sarcoidosis. Jared’s record setting attempt will be captured on video and the name of each supporter &/or loved one being honored will be mentioned as it is placed around his neck. After the attempt has been completed ASFL will mail participants the tags that they purchased and proceeds in access will be donated to a Sarcoidosis Research Program.

For more information about participating in Jared’s efforts to set a World Record in the name of Sarcoidosis Awareness send an email to: Asongfoundation@gmail.com.

Created by Simone Kelly, Holistic Business Coach/Master Life Coach

11. Embrace Your Mistakes

There are no accidents. There are no mistakes. There are no coincidences. Look at life’s mishaps as lessons. No matter how it turns out, you can rest assured, it will make you stronger and wiser — as long as you pay attention, step back, and dig deep to uncover the message that the incident has brought to your door.

12. Remember How To Play And Have Fun

Remember the games you played as a child? Find time for activities that spark your creativity, challenge your mind, and develop healthy competition with others; and you’ll never grow old!

13. Dare to Be Remarkable

Never, ever … dim your Light for ANYONE. Don’t apologize for who you are. Stand strong in your power. Be proud of your accomplishments. It takes strength to shine. Step into your greatness and OWN IT!

14. Laugh Yourself to Life

The best medicine is a good hearty laugh. Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. A comic on the television, your talented son, or your best friend can be the ‘doctor’ to bring it on. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, keeps you balanced, and reminds you to enjoy life again. Aside from improving our moods, laughter can reduce stress, help fight infection, and reduce pain. Turn your frown upside down today!

15. The Art of Appreciation

Tell someone thank you, especially those who wouldn’t be expecting it.

16. Move Your Body

Dance, walk, run, do yoga, rollerblade, Kickbox, Zumba … Just MOVE! Moving your body improves your circulation, vitality, health, and your life overall.

17. Take Action

Always be creating something new and incredible that will help you explore your full potential and will touch others lives.

18. Release Your Inhibitions

Try something different, something you’ve never done before. Shock your taste buds with a tantalizing dish. Go on a blind date. Get on a rollercoaster. Change your hair color. Role-play with your mate. Life is too short to be stuck in the same old routine ways. It’s fun to live on the wild side every now and then.

19. Be Yourself, Since Everyone Else is Taken

Revel in your uniqueness and authenticity. Don’t be afraid to be YOU in all of your greatness, and even your flaws. Take off the masks of protection and what you think other people want to see, and be yourself. Don’t worry about keeping up with the Joneses, since they are probably just as tired of trying to keep up with you!

20. Master Your Mind, Master Your Universe

Masters vibrate on an entirely different realm than everyone else. Masters are not bill -paying robots, just floating through life. They know who they are and they are CRYSTAL CLEAR on what they want. Become a master of self and rule your world.

Watermelon Mint Smoothie

I’m always tossing watermelon with fresh mint, so I decided to see how the two would blend in a smoothie. The result is like a cross between a sweet mint tea and a watermelon agua fresca.

2 cups, tightly packed, diced seedless watermelon

1 tablespoon fresh mint leaves

1 teaspoon sugar, agave syrup or vanilla sugar

3 to 4 ice cubes (more to taste)

Watermelon balls for garnish

1. Place all of the ingredients except the watermelon balls in the blender. Blend until frothy, about one minute. Pour into a glass, and garnish with watermelon balls. Serve right away.

Yield: One serving.

I had to ask myself, “What would you rather have an $80 grocery bill for grains, veggies and fruits or an $80,000 hospital bill for some surgery or extensive treatment?”

It’s truly a good feeling when you pay attention to what you put into your body…I’m feeling great and so far 6lbs lighter and I really enjoy eating like this all the time now.
A Doctor Dishes: Which ‘Superfoods’ Are Worth the Cost?Dr. Radha Chaddah

Most people you speak to these days are trying to stretch every dollar as far as possible—even the ones they spend buying apples and oranges.

Food prices are expected to increase yet again this year, and food manufacturers are making portions smaller without reducing prices. Not surprisingly, a recent Rasmussen poll found that 93% of adults report paying more for groceries now than they did a year ago.

So how can we supercharge our grocery dollars and get them to do overtime for us?

Yes, some foods are obviously a better nutritional deal than others (think apples vs. potato chips), but there’s another class of foods that blows the rest of the field away in terms of nutrients and health-protecting qualities: superfoods.

Superfoods can help prevent diabetes and heart disease, repair damage to your body’s cells and more. But before you go piling them into your cart, know that some “superfoods” are better nutritional bargains than others. As a doctor and a mom, I’ve sleuthed out which ones are worth the extra cost in terms of their long-term health benefits. Below is the scoop on which ones may help you age better, ward off cancer and more.

What to Know Before Buying Superfoods

Before we dive into what to buy, there are a few important things to remember about consuming these foods:

Eating foods fresh and in their natural state, especially fruits and vegetables (rather than in pill or powder supplement form), usually allows us to absorb the greatest amount of their nutrients. The way a superfood is processed or cooked can significantly lower its antioxidant content.

If the superfood can’t be eaten fresh, look for easy and appetizing recipes containing it. No matter how “super” a superfood may be, if you don’t know how to cook it, you’ll probably let it go to waste. CONTINUE READING HERE…

Your mother, aunt, sister, friend, or sadly, even yourself. I lost my warrior…my mother, Velma Gordon-Kelly to this cancer back in 2006. She battled breast cancer for over eight years like a true shero and I admired how strong she was throughout it all. Throughout the chemotherapy, radiation, numerous drugs and their side-effects, she fought it out with a smile. She never wanted people to feel sorry for her and was determined to keep doing the same things as usual. The one thing my mom did that shocked a lot of people was keep it a secret, which many people were in shock and even upset at her funeral. I think it’s just because she was old fashion and didn’t want people to start worrying about her. However, what I think it good is to let people know so that you have more people praying for you and sending you good energy. You may also inspire others and help young women to prevent it to happening to them!

Today, I’d like to showcase three warriors who are a dear friends and members of the Own Your Power Community. They are truly OWNING THEIR POWER and are examples of strong individuals we should all strive to be. Please check out what they are doing, give them a ‘virtual’ high-five of encouragement and if you can be so generous, even a donation to their cause.

It’s time to Pay it Forward….

Angela Darling, founder of Love Your Breasts.

I met Angela over 8 years ago while waiting in line for a women’s event and we have been friends ever since. Instantly, I connected with her and when I found out what she did, I was even more intrigued. Helping breast cancer survivors is her mission and at the time I met her, my mother was still with us and battling breast cancer. She began to offer free advice and great health information to my mother. I saw first-hand how she helps women in the community and vowed to support her business even more. Please take a look at what Angela Darling is doing to empower others and learn why she loves what she does!
Recently diagnosed with breast cancer, she is one of the strongest people I know and is taking her experience and sharing it to empower others. She is currently in need of donations for her treatments. Read on and see if you can help!

“Man, I long for the days when I could go weeks, even months without seeing even one doctor. I’ve been healthy all my life and can almost count the number of times on my two hands that I’ve seen doctors for any reason. But now, all that has changed. Actually, everything changed on July 7, 2011. That’s the day that I found out that I have Breast Cancer. That was the day that changed my life, challenged my thoughts and put everything that I’ve worked for into a fog. How could I have breast cancer? There was NEVER any cancer of any sort in my family history and I’ve always worked very hard through exercise, eating right and affirming good health all my life. So how could this be?...”

Losing weight isn’t easy, but it shouldn’t be a lesson in frustration either. Just because you decide to lose weight doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, there can be factors that come into play that you may not have considered. Knowing what you’re up against can give you the ammunition you need to win the war on weight loss. Check out these 10 scenarios that could be sabotaging your weight loss plans.

Drinking Too Much Wine

Drinking one glass of wine can help your heart and only adds about 150 calories to your intake, but drinking 2 or more glasses can have a detrimental effect on your waistline and your body. At this point, it reaches over into the over indulgent side, adds 300-500 calories to your daily intake and puts you at risk for serious diseases and conditions like Stroke and Diabetes.

Eating Mindlessly

Do you “snack” on supper while you’re preparing it or “grab a little” while fixing the kids’ lunch or snack? These mindless eating activities can add hundreds of “forgotten about” calories to your daily intake. So when you’re thinking you are on track, you’re really missing the mark. Be aware of everything you put into your mouth because it ALL adds up.

You’re NOT Moving

If you are relying solely on your diet to help you lose weight, you’ve got a wake-up call coming. Yes, you can lose weight through diet alone, but the catch is you will lose fat, muscle and water. And once your diet is finished, the weight will come back (sometimes in as little as two years) and it may be more weight than before. Why? Studies have shown that eating a nutritious diet along with strength training and cardiovascular exercise not only helps you to lose more weight, it keeps it from coming back. Most importantly, the weight you do lose is fat, your muscle stays intact, which helps keep the weight from piling back on.

You’re NOT Moving Enough

OK, so you started an exercise program to go along with your new diet, great! But are you really doing enough? Once or twice a week is not enough to help you lose enough body fat to make a difference. Yes, you will lose, but it will be so slow and incremental that you will most likely become frustrated and stop the whole program all together. Real, sustainable weight loss requires dedicated actions. You have to perform at least five (5) cardio sessions per week with each one lasting at least 30 minutes in order to see and maintain real change. In addition, you need to perform strength training exercises at a minimum of 2 times per week. Anything else is like swimming in quicksand, going nowhere.

You are Cheating Yourself On Sleep

Good shut-eye helps you lose weight. Studies have shown that people who sleep 6 or more hours per night are more likely to maintain a healthier weight than their sleep-deprived counterparts. Getting 8-10 hours of sleep per night is crucial to allowing your body time to complete all the functions it needs to do at night such as repairing and rebuilding muscle tissue. Your body uses fat to fuel its efforts, so if you cut the shut-eye short you’re really cutting down on the amount of excess fat your body is able to burn while you are sleeping.

Check Your Meds

Certain conditions like Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Depression and Heart Disease (there are more) are controlled by medications that can cause your body to put on weight or make it more difficult for you to take the weight off. Discuss the side-effects of any medication that you are currently taking with your doctor to decide on the right course of action for your individual case.

You are Not Eating Enough

Just as over-eating can lead your body to store excess calories as fat, under-eating or starving your body can cause you to store fat also. Most people mistakenly think that if they eat way less than before they went on their diet their body will lose more fat. Unfortunately this type of thinking leads your body to go into starvation mode. This means your body is now on survival alert status and begins to slow down all its processes in order to conserve (save) energy (fat) so that it can get through this perceived starvation period. So instead of turning your body into a fat burning machine, you’ve created the ultimate fat-storing machine.
