have some bad news and some good news for you about toxins and your brain. The bad news is, we live in a poisoned world that damages our brains. The good news is, we know how to avoid and help our bodies get rid of toxins, which gives the brain a chance to heal and repair itself.

We are exposed to toxins we were never designed to deal with — and nearly all of them cause brain injury.

A recent study of umbilical cord blood found 287 toxic chemicals, 217 of which are toxic to the brain and nervous system. And that is what infants are exposed to even before they take their first breath. These toxins include mercury, lead, PCBs, BPA, phthalates, plasticizers, flame retardants and more.

There are 6 million pounds of mercury emissions from coal burning every year, and 2.5 billion pounds of toxic chemicals released into the environment every year. Where does it all go? At least some of it gets into your body — and your brain. In fact, a recent government study found an average of 148 chemicals in our bodies. And those were only the ones they tested for.

Did you know that 25 percent of New Yorkers have toxic blood levels of mercury from eating too much sushi? Or that 15 percent of American women of child-bearing age have toxic levels of mercury in their blood? That means 15 percent of the 4 million children born in the United States each year, or 600,000 children, are exposed to toxic levels of mercury in the womb. And then there are the 3,500 different chemicals that are added to our food, and the more than 3,000 chemicals found in our homes.

Below I’ll discuss some of the effects these toxic chemicals have on our brains. I’ll outline six simple ways to detoxify your body and reactivate your body’s natural, built-in detox system. And I’ll reveal the master detoxifying molecule made in your body.

The toxic American

The average American consumes literally pounds of hormones, antibiotics, food chemicals, additives, artificial sweeteners, and MSG each year. Each one of these toxic chemicals has been shown to harm the brain.

On average we consume a gallon of neurotoxic pesticides and herbicides each year by eating conventionally grown fruits and vegetables. (And that’s with people eating much less than the 8 to 10 servings they should be eating!) Remember, pesticides work BECAUSE they are neurotoxic to pests — they attack their nervous system. Imagine what they do to your nervous system.

A recent study in The Lancet clearly showed that food additives make children hyperactive. Researchers took about 300 normal children and split them into two groups. Each group was given an identical-looking colored drink. One was naturally colored; the other contained sodium benzoate and many other colors and additives. The children who drank the additive-laden beverage were all much more hyperactive.

How toxins affect the brain and your health

These compounds and the total load of all the other toxins we are exposed to create what I call a “broken brain” — changes in mood, aggressive behavior, depression, problems with attention and focus, sleep problems, reduced intellectual performance, and memory loss..

I just received this and it was so good I had to share. Michael thanks so much for keeping us informed and smiling! Excellent, excellent read!

Simone

A couple of weeks ago I attended the Inbound Marketing Summit (#IMS09) at Gillette Stadium in nearby Foxboro, Massachusetts. It was essentially a social media conference, and I figured it would be a good way for me to immerse myself in the topic. Plus it came with lunch.

There were a number of things about the event which I really liked…

I liked how they held it at a football stadium instead of a boring hotel. I liked how they had tables – not just chairs – so you could comfortably open a computer or take notes. I liked how they limited most speakers to just 15 minutes (some to just 10).

One of the keynoters – a guy named Gary Vaynerchuk – began his talk in what I have to say, was a very unusual way. His first words were something along the lines of, “I’m going to apologize up front, because when I get excited about a topic, I tend to use a lot of profanity.”

In this regard, Gary did not disappoint. Nothing too over the top, but certainly a bit odd to hear the headliner at a business event repeatedly drop the f-bomb.

Interestingly, among the half dozen or so people from the audience who came up to the mic to ask Gary a follow-up question, two of them also used profanity. It was as if Gary had discovered a secret door, and once opened, others couldn’t help but walk through.

That’s when I realized something very important about the impact of social media. Not so much the profanity part (necessarily), but the idea that the line between who we are as business people and who we are in our personal lives is blurring.

And whether you think this kind of loosening up is a refreshing change or a sign of the apocalypse, I assure you, it’s coming.

Your Facebook “friends” consist of both business colleagues and high school buddies. Your Twitter “followers” are defined as anyone who feels like watching what you have to say (whether you like it or not). A Google search on your name is just as likely to bring up your running time in a local 5K race as it is your bio on the company web site.

Your ability to separate the business you from the personal you is going away.

That’s huge. And when the dust settles on the social media hype (just as it eventually did on the dot com hype), there are going to be some significant changes in the way business gets done.

One of these will be an expectation by your clients and customers that the disembodied voices behind the company walls come forward and reveal themselves as real, accessible, three-dimensional people. (Wow, that was kind of a good sentence, huh?)

With every passing day, there is less tolerance for company-speak, less interest in being sold to, and a rising expectation that you and your colleagues make yourselves available to the outside world for immediate and easy interaction.

Three recommendations for thriving in the new order:

Find your real voice. For my money, companies (of all sizes) are too focused on branding and not focused enough on “revealing.” Crafting a perfect tagline or benefit statement is less and less important in a world where human connection is what people hunger for.

Take a look at every brochure, every web page, every on hold message, every invoice – every point of contact your company has with the outside world – and make sure it feels authentic. Not shiny and perfect… authentic.
Showcase your real people.

Here’s my web site rule: No pictures of people who don’t actually work at your company. I don’t care if your staff isn’t beautiful; if I can thrive with my face on my web site, believe me, you can too. (I mean your face, you can’t use mine.)

Likewise, if you’re concerned that your senior staff is looking a little too male and a little too pale to “make the right impression,” the solution isn’t to throw up a race- and gender-balanced stock photo on your web site. It’s to start hiring people who actually represent the groups you claim to serve.
Throw open your doors. I’m still amazed at the number of people who are just plain hard to reach. They don’t return your e-mails, they don’t return your voicemails, they don’t pick up the phone. And when you do reach them, they don’t want to talk to you unless you’re ready to buy something right now.

I think that’s insane. Every interaction you have – whether you’re sitting in your office or sitting at your kid’s basketball game – is a marketing opportunity. And the ones that come inbound (i.e., the people who seek you out) are free.
Here’s the bottom line: Social media is going to finish the job that the Internet started 15 years ago. Pretty soon, there will be no place left to hide.

Start changing the way your company speaks, looks and behaves now. Because before you know it, what’s just a hope about your organization will become an expectation.

As a long-time member of Give ‘n Take and Own Your Power, K. Saquile Lazenby definitely knows what it means to help others and Own Your Power! Her three-year old company, Life Skills Miami, Inc. offers valuable programs and workshops on financial literacy, credit counseling, and life skills catering especially to teens! Don’t we all wish we knew about something like this when we were that age up?

Get to know Saquile and why she LOVES what she does!

What does your business do? We teach the importance of budgeting, saving, investing, and credit to youth and young adults through our financial literacy program “Money Matters”. We teach our programs in after-school programs, summer camps, and special events.

Any interesting fact(s) you can share about your industry? Due to the current economy, there is now a push at least regionally to teach teenagers about the importance of financial literacy. There are organizations and schools reaching out to bring our program to their schools. Habits start young.

What year did you kiss Corporate America goodbye and why do you hope to never go back? I kissed Corporate America goodbye in 2004. I enjoy the flexibility of my schedule and the opportunity to be a strong presence in my daughter’s life, active in my church, and attend seminary school.
How do you stay motivated? I was born with a mission to teach financial literacy in communities that are largely ignored by mainstream America. Knowing that there are people out there that do not know how to create a budget, manage their bank accounts, or anything about saving and investing keeps me going. Also, I am blessed to attend any activity my daughter is involved in and plus I can go to the beach and work if I want. That is motivation enough. I like being paid for my results as oppose to my time. I can create wealth faster this way.

Biggest pet peeve in business? People showing up to meetings unprepared or cancelling at meeting at the last minute.

What’s a bold move you took that turned your business around? I decide to fundraise for our organization. It helps us to expand more rapidly to more schools. We are grateful for all of the grants we receive and we want to add on by learning not to be at the whim of grant-funding.

What’s your favorite area on www.ownyourpower.ning.com? The barter and success stories. I have been fortunate in obtaining clients to help start investment clubs and implement retirement plans for their company. I am a financial planner by career. Although, I am semi-retired. I will help people whenever I am called upon.

What’s a unique talent that you have that might surprise us? I am martial artist. I have been practicing martial arts for the past 15 years. Although, I stop for several years, I am now back into the swing of things. So watch out! Just kidding!

It’s sadly time for your last meal on earth…what would it be? I would some of my grandmother’s okra with tomatoes and fried chicken (even though, I am a vegetarian). I might as well go out with a bang. Oh, a slice of her coconut cake with almonds and bananas.

Have you used Social Networking to gain new contacts/business? If so, what have been any results? Yes, some of Own Your Power Communication’s members started an investment club and I’ve spoken to groups of women on the importance of investing.

If you could do it all over again, what is the biggest mistake you’d avoid next time around? I would start with a business plan and hire an assistant that speaks Spanish. Hey, I live in Miami.

Most exciting moment that you got your time to shine? I was featured in several local papers in California and am about to do a couple of morning shows here in Miami over the next few weeks.

What was your last barter and what was if for?
I created a financial plan for a woman that owned a boutique and she gave me a $500 gift certificate and I bought two amazing dresses. I can’t wait to where them.

What’s in your cd player/ipod right now? Feist, Bjork, Alice Russell, Coltrane, Brand Nubian, Erykah Badu, Goapele, Monk

If you could have superpowers, what would you want? My super power to travel where ever I want, when I want. Just close my eyes, cross my arms, click my feet, and envision the place in my mind and bing I am there with a staff waiting to serve me. Lol
I know, I know…it’s so hard to make time for “Me Time Rituals”, which is why I love finding neat websites like these. You can do some of these things from the comfort of your desk! I stumbled across this page by mistake and was just taken in. I love waterfalls and it’s my favorite place to ‘go’ when I meditate. Come join me at these beautiful waterfalls. Music is relaxing. Enjoy your mini-escape.

DESK PILATES…Who knew?
Disclaimer: Of course, I wouldn’t recommend doing this if you have a lot of people around you and no office door. I don’t want you getting fired because of Pilates!
Exercise without leaving your desk. Pilate’s instructor Eleanor Gomez demonstrates a simple workout that will help prevent repetitive strain injury, strengthen your spine, and make sitting, working, and playing more comfortable.

You might think you’re not big enough or that maybe your company is not complicated enough, so why should you have a operations manual? Well, in my coaching, I talk about 7 Ultimate Systems you need to have in place to have your business run with or without you and an Operations Manual is one of them!

Let’s say you’d like to go away on vacation. That would be nice huh? I know of few of you reading this probably forgot what that was right? LOL Well, when you have a manual and of course a team to read it, there are some things that you can put in it to help them handle issues while you’re gone.

Read this article to learn what you should have in yours to make it ‘fool proof’. This valuable tool should be in every entreprenuars back pocket!

Own Your Power!

Simone

Your Operations Manual by Emyth Coach

At the heart of a systems-driven business is your company’s operations manual. The operations manual is the authoritative guidebook of how things are done in your business. It gives you an effective way of communicating policy and procedures, and gives your employees the independence and security they need to operate in their jobs for maximum results.

If you’re like most of us, you probably have a folder filed away at home that’s full of all the manuals for the various electronic devices in your household. When you need to know how to work your microwave or your television breaks, the first place you go for help is that folder. In your business, your operations manual acts in the same way. It serves as the single-point reference for all important company information. And when used properly, it’s not just a place to go to look for “fixes,” rather it’s the first thing employees familiarize themselves with so they know how things work, right from the start.

What’s in an Operations Manual?

Content will vary from business to business, but the structure of an operations manual is universal. It should be comprised of the following areas:

Company History, Vision & Organization

Products & Services

Policies

Position Statements

Systems (Action Plans)

Your operations manual should essentially cover two main areas: companywide information that every employee in the organization needs to know and position-specific information.

The first three bullets in the list above (Company History, Vision & Organization, Products & Services and Policies) make up the portion of the manual that apply to everyone in the organization. They help people understand the “whole picture” including the organizational structure of the company, what you offer to your customers or clients and the general policies under which you operate

I don’t know why I’m facinated with these OCD or Horder type of shows, but there was good one on yesterday with a guy who was pretty much living in his own well, WASTE. I kid you not.
Space Treat: The Power of the Purge! from Erica
www.TheSpacialist.com

This is one of the things I just love about organizing with my clients… so, last week a client and I are elbow deep in her papers, sifting through and making sense of them when she exclaims… “It feels so good to get rid of this stuff and make some new space! I haven’t used this stuff in 10 years and I’ve been carting it around during 2 moves! It’s just amazing how you hold onto stuff that you never end up using or even needing.”

Wow! It’s so fantastic to be there with a client when they start to experience the power of the purge! I love sharing these moments with them!

And it led directly to today’s Space Treat topic… The power of the purge!

It seems to have 3 distinct phases.

Phase 1. Overwhelm:
The thought of even trying to tackle your papers, your utility closets, your clothes, or even your kitchen has become totally overwhelming because you know deep in your heart that this process is going to be full of tons of items that need a decision to finally be made about it and this sends you running to a simpler task like washing the dishes, doing the laundry or checking email again. Thus putting off the dreaded task again and directly adding more fuel to the overwhelm flames.

Phase 2. Digging in:
You’ve made a conscious decision to turn your inertia into action and now your brain is getting a full throttle work out. Your papers, your clothes, your closets are finally getting the attention they’ve been begging you for. (Hint: You know your stuff is begging for attention, the more you dread giving it.) You’re finally digging into your disorganization and making decisions whether to keep or toss your stuff.

Phase 3. Liberation and relief:
You’ve plowed through shelves, drawers and boxes. You addressed everything head on and put it in an appropriate place… keep, donation, recycle, toss.

Ultimately each phase has it’s own unique power.
Phase 1: The power that you feel your stuff has over you.
Phase 2: The power you claim for yourself and your space by choosing to finally address your stuff.
Phase 3: The power that embodies you knowing that you’ve successfully finished this once daunting task and now have new space to breath, move and live in!

Go ahead now, go experience the power of the purge!

When you put your blood, sweat and tears into something that you’re passionate about, the worst thing to do is see it COPY AND PASTED on someone else’s website where they are reaping the benefits of your BRAND. Or imagine seeing that someone had an event with your name on it and got PAID FOR YOUR IDEA OR CONCEPT! Yes, this happens everyday since, there are many people out there who are not creative to come up with their own company names, logos, or concept so they take from others. All hope is not lost and you can protect yourself. (Sorry, do I sound bitter? Well, it’s happenend to me more than once!) ~ let it go Simone, let it go~ LOL

My attorney, Patricia Lawrence-Kolaras is definitely one of the most powerful and important people on the Own Your Power team, because she cares about what I do and wants to make sure I am the only one benefiting from it. I say this to say because yes, I have seen a few OWN YOUR POWER copycats out there and because of Patricia they get SHUT DOWN withing 20 minutes of talking to them. ~ The crowd roars~ LOL

Own Your Power is protected by a FEDERAL TRADEMARK. No one wants to end up in FEDERAL COURT so, they handle it they way it should be. Pay a licensing fee and take down whatever they had up that was infringing on my trademark. The best part is I don’t have to do anything. Patricia handles the dirty work and I think she loves it.

If your brand is YOUR BABY, then don’t let anyone else STEAL IT. Protect it the right way.
