How long have you been in business? Between Spirit & Stone was founded January 2006.
What does your business do? Designing and creating handcrafted semiprecious/precious gemstone jewelry.
Any interesting fact you can share about your industry? There are many different types of jewelry design and lots of different techniques. Materials vary and so does quality and price point. I enjoy seeing what others have created. There is something out there for everyone.
Most popular problem you help people solve? I help my clients solve which piece to choose. My designs are one of a kind, and they vary in size and shape. Sometimes a client seeks advice on size and color. I wouldn’t really call it a problem, it is more about identifying their personal preferences and making suggestions. There is quite a bit to choose from.
How do you stay motivated? I stay motivated by remembering that this gift is special, unique, good enough, and valuable. Success and sales keep me motivated as well. Love it when I have a really good show. And I love being appreciated as a working artist.
What is your biggest pet peeve in business? My biggest pet peeve in business is not returning phone calls or emails. If you are not interested, just say so. Cell calls and text messaging during a meeting. General rudeness … no shows … oh, don’t get me started.
It’s sadly time for your last meal on earth…what would it be? My last meal on earth would have to contain lobster, crab cakes, filet minion, and various and sundry goodies … lol …
Have you used Social Networking to gain new contacts/business? If so what have been any results?
I use social networking to expand my client base and to meet other artists. I have also booked shows as a result of my social contacts. It also allows more people to be exposed to my work.
Have you used Bartering to expand your business? My last barter was jewelry for a piece of art from another artist.
What was the most exciting moment that you got your time to Shine? Mine just happened recently. I was chosen as a featured artist for Spoken Soul Festival and was featured in the current issue of WeMerge Magazine. (Visit my Page on Own Your Power for a look at the article.)

If you could have superpowers, what would you want? One thing I would change if I could would be negative thinking and actions of others. This world has the potential for everyone to live in peace and harmony, and for everyone’s needs to be met.

There are many talented and successful artists working hard every day to do what they love. Some people are able to periodically earn money with their passion, but for many artists, that income is not enough to consider it a “living.”
It is perhaps unfortunate, but true, that there are many preconceived notions about artists and other creative types. For example:
While these may be stereotypical preconceptions (or misconceptions), if you’re a creative person, you may identify with some them. The point is that creative and artistic types often face particular challenges in transitioning from thinking of themselves strictly as “artists” to adopting the mindset of a business owner. So much of what makes an artist thrive stems from right-brain thinking. So much of what makes a business owner successful comes from left-brain processes.
In his book Career Management for the Creative Person, author Lee Silber refers to “The Seven (Bad) Habits of Highly Ineffective Creative People.” In this list he mentions seven tendencies that seem to be particularly common among “right-brain types,” as he calls them. The list includes procrastination, the desire to take on every job, the inability to be satisfied financially, being egotistic and overly confident, the tendency towards addictive behaviors including becoming a “workaholic,” and a lack of discipline.
Does this mean that artists cannot make great business owners and entrepreneurs? Certainly not! Some of the most successful businesspeople in the world are artists first and foremost.
So what’s the secret for the lucky few who have managed to turn their artistic passions into a profitable business? How can one go from being a talented artist who makes money to a business owner who still functions as a talented artist? On one level this is the same question that any professional—be it a graphic designer or a hair stylist—must ask themselves. The key is being willing to transition from being an “artist” to a business owner, or in E-Myth terminology, to go from being strictly a Technician to becoming and Entrepreneur.
As an entrepreneur one is engaged in an enterprise. Webster’s defines an “enterprise” as: A project undertaken that is of some importance or that requires boldness or energy. A company organized for commercial purposes; a business firm.
The implications here are numerous, but key is that a successful enterprise requires a boldness of vision, a plan for achieving that vision, and an energetic strategy for carrying out that plan. Another implication is that it will not be done alone. A team is essential for the successful building and management of a business. This does not necessarily mean hiring employees, but at the very least, having a network of mentors, colleagues, sub-contractors and vendors is critical.
Building a business means having operations in place for managing finances, for directing marketing, lead generation, and lead conversion functions, and for client fulfillment and internal management processes. Being a business owner means being ultimately accountable for the successful implementation and orchestration of all the various systems needed to make the business run smoothly, effectively and profitably.
And there is the danger for the owner who wants to remain the artist: how does one build, manage, and oversee all of that while still having time to pursue one’s creative aspirations?
Every successful endeavor begins with a vision and a plan to achieve that vision. As an entrepreneurial artist desiring to become a business owner, developing a clear vision of your business is vital. And this doesn’t mean sitting around thinking about it. You must write it down, give it shape… Give it life. You can even draw it out if that’s easier for you! Bottom line, your vision doesn’t mean anything if it’s just ideas swimming around your head; you need to get it documented.

Cleansing, fasting, detoxing, call it what you want — the body needs a break from all of the poisons we put in it daily. Some people do a 3 day or 30 day cleanse seasonally. I hear celebrities like Beyonce and Gabrielle Reece do a 1 or 3 day cleanse a week to stay healthy and slim. However, cleansing shouldn’t be to just lose weight but, as Cleaster Cotton says..to lose WASTE.
I wanted to share with you one of the experts from the Own Your Power family’s journey. She started off with a huge commitment of 90 days and then it expanded to 100 and she’s still going. Last I heard it was 120.

I’ve tried to cleanse until dinner..a technique I learned from the RAW FOOD DETOX DIET. I also combine a lot of what I’ve learned from Cleaster and I use her Herbal Elite blend she creates mixed with fruit juices to give me the energy and nutrients I need when cleansing. Giving Thanks: Fasting for 107 Days© 2010 Cleaster Cotton
THANK YOU one and all… for your support on my Journey to Health and Wellness. It is Day 107 of my fast. I have been living off of Herbal Elite, the plant-based cell food, fresh fruit juice and water for over 100 days. To those of you who have asked me about my energy level and wanted to know if I am weak and sluggish… and if my body is feeding upon itself. My energy level is high and my nervous system is calm and peaceful. Love fills my heart and I am comfortable in my high school-size body. And I am fitting my jeans! Do you hear me?! LOL. My gym work out includes cardio, the circuit, free weights, running the track, stretching and the sauna. I run the beach, walk, dance, laugh and play. I feel fabulous and wonder-filled.
Cellular cleansing and regeneration is remarkably evident. I remain steadfast to my healing and yours. I know that CHRONIC CONSTIPATION begins in the early stages of childhood development. After 100 plus days of fasting and not chewing anything, I am still having bowel movements. I am not done yet! So, my journey continues.
