You all know German as my co-host from Own Your Power Radio, however he does a lot more than that! German DuBois III, is a professional educator, with over 25 years of experience in Non Profit Executive Management, who has dedicated his career to developing youth, families and communities. One of his newest endeavors has been a major passion for him and it grew into a new non-profit. Check out his interview and see their feature on NBC6!
Describe your business: Nonprofit charity that uses the Power of Art to teach youth critical life skills and challenge them to think intentionally about their future-focus.
We facilitate a program model that engages youth to brainstorm ideas/concepts and images that represent the concept of HOPE and how it applies to their lives, which becomes the basis for the mural that they design and paint on the selected wall.
What inspired you to start it? After completing 22 murals in a 6 week period as part of the Puerto Rico Hope campaign, post Hurricane Maria, I was inspired to expand upon the concept of HOPE and how it applies to people’s lives, particularly in the lives of vulnerable youth who are in despair and often forgotten.
What have been some of the challenges? Funding is always a challenge. I am currently financing the project personally, but I am actively seeking sponsorship and grant opportunities.
What skills have you used to pull it all together? Having worked in Non-profit management for over 25 years, I was able to harness all of my experiences and skill sets to jump start HOPE Murals in early 2018.
How does it feel now that you’ve come this far?
It has been an amazing journey thus far, and we are still flying below the radar. Recently, I testified at a court hearing of one of our participants, and was asked to serve as a character reference for the young lady who had participated in our mural project. She stated, that HOPE Murals was responsible for challenging her to reflect on her mistakes and motivating her to move forward towards her goals.
What would you like your legacy to be? How do you want to be remembered?
We are currently in talks with the state office of the DJJ, to expand HOPE Murals to other facilities throughout the State. Ultimately, I am interested in expanding nationally and impacting the lives of thousands of youth.
